What Are the Best Acne Products?

When you have acne you want to know what are the best acne products to take care of it. To answer this question appropriately we first have to look at what type of acne you have.

There are 4 basic types of acne. These can be broken down into closed comedones (whiteheads), open comedones (blackheads), papules and pustules. There is overlap in the treatment of some of these, but you need to differentiate which one or ones you have to target them correctly.

All acne starts when a skin follicle becomes blocked. Sebum, a waxy/oily substance found in the skin to moisturize it mixes with dead skin cells that are flaking off the skin's surface. It forms a plug which blocks the follicle. When this mixture stays below the surface of the skin a closed comedone, or whitehead is formed. If the mixture comes into contact with oxygen a chemical reaction takes place which turns the mixture black or brown. This is how an open comedone or blackhead is formed.

Papules differ from the previous 2 types in that now bacteria are accumulating in the pimple. Do not ever pick a papule as the bacteria inside of it can spread. Papules are red and often painful. Papules can turn into pustules, when dead white cells that have gone to the area to fight bacteria die and accumulate. Again refrain from popping these as the bacteria can spread and cause more problems.

Now what you want to know... how to get rid of these problems using the best acne products. Whiteheads respond best to exfoliation. Using beta or alpha hydroxy acid will melt away the skin/sebum plugs. To get rid of blackheads you need to remove excess oil from the skin. Using a good clay mask will help with this problem. Epsom salt will also remove many impurities from the skin, including blackheads.

Papules and pustules need to be treated differently since they contain bacteria. One of the most standard treatments for these types of acne is benzoyl peroxide. It works well because it takes care of 2 problems. It kills the bacteria in the pimples, but it also helps get rid of the dead skin cells that are blocking the follicles. Tea tree oil is also great at killing the bacteria responsible for these skin problems.

When trying to find the best acne products it is important to take the time to analyze your face to determine which type of acne you have. This way you will know which acne products are best for you.
